2022.01.28 22:57 TARS1986 Looking for a quiver, all-road/gravel bike. Torn between All City Gorilla Monsoon, Surly MS, and Kona Rove.

I have access to all three, and I want to own just one bike to accomplish my biking needs which are mostly road with summer singletrack and adventure riding. I live up in Seattle.
I’m attracted the most to the Gorilla Monsoon for its looks and ability to throw in some huge tires for more gnarly stuff. But, would it be weird to run 650x47 tires for more general all round use?
Midnight Special is very exciting seeming too for its racing geo, but seems like I wouldn’t be able to hit steeper gravel stuff with it but please prove me wrong.
Rove seems the most utilitarian of the three and seems like it could be a true one bike bike. But it doesn’t seem as fun for some reason.
Let me know your thoughts.

2022.01.28 22:57 freelutri Tai Sli phonology

Overview and goals
This is a summary of the phonology of Tai Sli, a conlang I've been working on lately for a race of humanoid lizards (the initial inspiration, if anyone's curious, is the faction of lizards from the board game Root). My goal isn't to make a rigorously non-human phonology, but one that uses human phonetic categories (and is comfortably pronounceable to me) while suggesting non-human speakers, primarily through the absence of rounded vowels (a staple of reptilian conlangs), and, more impressionistically, an unusual contrast between palatalized and "lateralized" consonants. (Note that I do include [m] and [p] as phones, on the grounds that, although they are classified as "labial," all that is required to produce them is the ability to close one's mouth, not flexible lips.)
The grammar of language (which I won't discuss here) is analytic and isolating; in particular, phonological words are all one or two syllables and there is no affixation (outside of a few pronominal forms).
Onset consonants
Consonants (other than /ʔ/) are divided into two groups: "soft" consonants, which for the most part are palatalized or have a palatal place of articulation, and "hard" consonants, which are not palatalized, and before front vowels either are lateral or have a lateral release. The following consonants occur in the syllable onset:

"Labial" Coronal Dorsal Glottal
hard soft hard soft hard soft
Plain plosive c ʔ
Asp. plosive pˡʰ pʲʰ tˡʰ tʲʰ kˡʰ
Fricative ʃ xˡ [ɬˠ ~ x] ç
Nasal ŋ [ɲ]
Glide ɰˡ [lˠ ~ ɰ] j
The lateral release on the hard consonants is present only before front vowels. The lateral allophones of /xˡ/ and /ɰˡ/ follow the same distribution, but rather than merely having a lateral release they are fully lateral [ɬˠ] and [lˠ].
Phonetically, the lateral release of hard consonants (when present) takes the form of a following apical-dental lateral approximant [l̺], which is devoiced after aspirated consonants and [s]. The coronal hard plosives /tˡ tˡʰ/ are also apical-dental, but /sˡ nˡ/ are (apical) alveolar. On the other hand, the coronal soft consonants, in addition to being palatalized, are laminal and alveolar. However, /ʃ/—which takes the place of expected */sʲ/—is post-alveolar and not strongly palatalized.
The aspirated consonants are prone to frication, especially /tʲʰ/, which is regularly realized as [t͡ɕ].
Unlike the other pairs of hard and soft consonants, [ŋ] and [ɲ] do not contrast. [ɲ] occurs in positions adjacent to front vowels, and [ŋ] in all other contexts.
In running speech, /ʔ/ at the beginning of a word is usually omitted after a consonant and realized as [h] after unstressed /ə/.
Syllable nuclei
The following vowels can occur in stressed syllables:
Front Back
High i ɯ
Mid e ɤ
Low æ ɑ
Each vowel can be either long or short; long and short vowels do not differ notably in quality.
There are also two diphthongs, /ai̯ aɯ̯/, and a syllabic fricative /z̩/, which is realized as [z] after hard consonants and [ʒ] after soft ones.
In an unstressed syllable there is only one permitted nucleus, /ə/: it acts as a front vowel (and is realized close to [e] or [ɪ]) when preceded by a soft consonant, and as a back vowel (realized close to [ɤ] or unrounded [ʊ]) when preceded by a hard consonant.
Coda consonants
There are four contrasting consonants which can end a syllable, each of which has a different realization depending on whether it follows a front or back vowel:
plosive nasal sibilant dorsal fricative
/T/ /N/ /S/ /H/
After front vowel (/i/) [ĭʔ] [in] [iʃ] [iç]
After back vowel (/ɯ/) [ɯ̆k̚] [ɯŋ] [ɯs] [ɯx]
(I use capital letters as the phonemic representation of the coda consonants because they collapse together phonemes that are distinct in the syllable onset.)
Romanization
The romanization I use is intended to be conveniently typeable for me, and reflect the structure of the phonology while also giving a good indication of correct pronunciation to readers unfamiliar with it--in particular, the lateral release on hard consonants is always indicated with orthographic l when present.
Onset consonants are written as follows:
"Labial" Coronal Dorsal Glottal
hard soft hard soft hard soft
Plain plosive bl bi dl di gl gi '
Asp. plosive pl pi tl ti kl ki
Fricative sl si hl hi
Nasal ml mi nl ni ng ny
Glide l y
The l after hard consonants is omitted before u, o, and a (when not representing /æ/). The i after soft consonants is omitted before i and e. The glottal stop is unwritten at the beginning of a word. The distinction between ng and ny is non-contrastive, as explained above, but represented in writing. (Why? Because the alternative is to use a diacritic and there isn't one I like aesthetically. Maybe later I'll come to my senses and replace ng/ny with ň.)
The vowels /i ɯ e ɤ ɑ/ are written i u e o a. /æ/ is written ea, but after a hard consonant written with following l (and after ny), simply a. (So for example, /sˡɑ/ and /sˡæ/ are written sa and sla.) Long vowels are marked with an acute accent (ea becomes ). The diphthongs /ai̯/ and /aɯ̯/ are ei and eu after soft consonants and ai au otherwise. The unstressed vowel /ə/ is written e when it acts as a front vowel and o otherwise.
The syllabic fricative /z̩/ is written iz after soft consonants and uz elsewhere.
The final consonants are written as follows:
/T/ /N/ /S/ /H/
After front vowel (i) it in is ih
After back vowel (u) uk ung us uh
In consonant clusters (which all have the form fricative + unaspirated dorsal or coronal stop), the stop is written as t or k, even though it is unaspirated.
Syllable and word structure (with example words)
A phonological word may consist of one or two syllables. Two-syllable words are always stressed on the first syllable. The possible phonological shapes for words, where C represents an initial consonant, V a short vowel or diphthong, and F a final consonant, are:
(The phonetic transcriptions of the example words indicate some allophonic details I didn't think were worth mentioning in the main post.)

2022.01.28 22:57 DiddledByDad The Lengths is a very simple and beginner friendly guitar song for all my guitar enthusiasts out there.

Hi all. I am very new and very much a beginner to learning how to play guitar and I am also a huge Keys fan.
While a lot of the stuff they play is way outside my scope of skill (plus I only have an acoustic), The Lengths, one of my favorite TBK songs and one of the most gorgeous and somber pieces of music I’ve ever experienced, is incredibly beginner friendly. The intro picking is relatively easy and straightforward, and there’s only three chords used with only minor tweaks in certain parts of the song.
The only thing you’ll need is a capo and that’s it. You can also get a slide and learn that portion of the song as well but the main chords and picking are simple.
Just wanted to put this out there for all my guitar friends out there that might be overlooking having this gem in your back pocket. I’m gonna try to get really good and post a cover in a month or two. Good luck!
